If you’re an experienced cook, you probably know that not all rice is the same and that each grain type requires a particular cooking method. Perhaps, you also know that for a stir-fry, it’s critical to sauté the ingredients over medium to high heat. Or, that no authentic Asian recipe is served without soy sauce on the side. But, what is there to know about making the perfect fried rice?
– Choosing the right rice: Fried rice recipes are usually made with slender and long-grain rice varieties. These grains help to avoid clumps from forming and maintain their separate form. So, rice can be blended and filled with the flavors of the remaining ingredients. For authentic Asian cuisine recipes, our go-to is Mahatma® Long Grain & Jasmine Rice Blend. This blend gives you the best of both worlds. Consider how to cook jasmine rice and remember that you use less water than you do when preparing those extra fluffy White rice grains.
– Cooling the rice: Although choosing long-grain rice helps to avoid soggy and sticky clumps, cooling it down once its cooked is also crucial. Here you have three alternatives. Either you cook the rice in advance, so it has enough cooling time, use leftover rice, or spread it over a baking sheet on a cooling rack.
– Controlling the amount of soy sauce: Fried Rice isn’t complete unless drizzled with soy sauce but, over exceeding a few tablespoons could affect the flavor of your dish. This savory and watery sauce should give your rice a toasty look without tinting the grains to brown. Also, if you are a lover of its thick flavor, make sure to cut out the salt from the ingredient list.
– Using Chinese vegetables: Nowadays, typical Asian foods are not difficult to find. Make sure to include at least one of these ingredients (usually vegetables) to guarantee an authentic taste – even if they’re from the frozen section. Toss in some chopped bok choy, green onions, bean sprouts or sliced water chestnut.
